FAQs
How do I apply for Medicare?
If you already receive Social Security retirement benefits and reside in the United States, you typically will be enrolled automatically in Medicare Part A and B when you turn 65. Otherwise, you can sign up online at SSA.GOV, visit a local Social Security office, or call 800-MEDICARE.
When should I apply for Medicare?
You are eligible to enroll when you turn 65 years old. There is a 7-month window, which is called the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). The window includes the 3 months before you turn 65, the month you turn 65, and the 3 months after.
Individuals who are on disability and younger than 65 may also be eligible.
What if I missed my Initial Enrollment Period?
Yes! You can review and make changes to your plan annually during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7). Senior HRS can guide you through this process. Read more about managing your plan here.
Are there any penalties for enrolling late?
Yes. If you miss your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) and you are not eligible for a deferment, you may incur a penalty for Medicare Part B and Part D. The penalty would be added to your monthly premium for as long as you have Medicare.
How do I apply for a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage Plan?
After enrolling in Part A and B, you can enroll in either a Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement plan. Whichever path you choose, it is important to ensure you will also have either Part D coverage or some other creditable form of prescription drug coverage.
You can work with a licensed independent agent who can help to find you a plan that fits your needs, or you can go to Medicare Plan Finder to enroll directly with an insurer. There is no cost to use a licensed agent while providing the additional benefits of ensuring you are enrolling correctly and assigning you a dedicated resource for post-enrollment issues.
When do I get my Medicare card?
If you are already receiving Social Security benefits, you will typically receive your card three months before your 65th birthday. If, however, you need to proactively sign up for Medicare, you will receive your card within approximately 30 days after enrolling.
Can I apply for Medicare in-person?
Yes. You can apply for Medicare in-person at your local Social Security Administration office. Alternatively, you can work with a licensed Medicare Agent who can help you apply.
Can I get personalized assistance in finding the best plan for me?
Yes. A licensed Medicare Agent can assist you at no cost. Notably, all agents are not appointed with all carriers.
Should I consider a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan?
If you have Original Medicare, a Medigap policy can help cover gaps like copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance that Parts A & B don’t cover. Learn more about Medigap plans here.
