Medicare is an incredibly complex program. In 2022, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Medicare program provided coverage to over 64 million Americans and spent over $750 billion (net), amounting to almost 3% of the country’s GDP1. For Medicare eligible Americans who receive Medicaid, a Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), Disability Income, or Institutional Long-Term Care, the complexity of coordinating Medicare with such needs is significantly greater.
For these segments of the population, the range of services, quality of care, and benefit options vary widely among states. Most states will typically include some form of coordinated care plan (i.e. Special Needs Plans), Medicare-Medicaid Plans (MMPs), and Program for all Inclusive Care (PACE). The challenge is finding state-specific service and benefit options for your circumstances, obtaining access to such services, and coordinating the state administered programs with the federal government’s Medicare program.
